Site Eight – Stewart’s Crossing

Drive 8.8 miles further along U.S. 119 through Connellsville to the intersection with Rte. 982. Until recently, at 4.1 miles, a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker stood on the right side of the road noting Braddock’s camp of June 28-29, 1755. The text of the marker was: Braddock’s Road - Stewart’s CrossingGeneralBraddock’s Twelfth Camp, June 28, 1755, on the march of Ft. Duquense, was north of here near the Youghiogheny River. On June 30 the army forded the river at Stewart’s Crossing to a point mile northwest of present-day Connelsville. Once having crossed the Youghiogheny, the army encamped for two days a mile north of the river. The location is not precisely known. During these two days, Braddock put the troops into a higher state of alert to avoid ambush. As you go through Connelsville, not the Youghiogheny River. Braddock considered this a very dangerous crossing and took precautions to be sure his men were not attacked as they waded though water three feet deep. |
