Family Friday - Who Do We Think We Are?
Friday, August 17, 2012
1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
This program will explore the fascinating study of family histories in several ways:
We will discuss a new book, titled 'Family History Projects for Kids,' that features 12 months of creative, hands-on activities including creating family tree charts, doing gravestone rubbings, making a family history game, and even creating a family history documentary film. We hope families will be excited to learn how to research their own family histories and discover real-life pieces to a puzzle, just waiting to be put together. The value of such projects is both historical and personal.
Using stencils and handouts related to design and symbolism of frakturs, participants will create a personal record of a part of their own family history.
Finally, a real-life family history, written in 1825 by Massey Harbison, will be discussed with a slide presentation by Drenda Gostkowski, who has done extensive research on this captivity narrative in order to republish the account and make it real for today's readers. Massey was 22 years old, had 3 children and was pregnant with a fourth, when she was taken captive by a Native American war party near Freeport, PA in the spring of 1792. The personal memoir of her capture, escape, and long trek home through the wilderness is a fascinating story that reveals not only Massey's history, but also tells something important about life on the PA frontier and about the role of women in history.
Copies of both books discussed, as well as a Family History Tool Kit, will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.
