The first stop will be to see the Fort Pitt Museum's current exhibit, 'The American Frontier Rifleman: Tall Tales and Truth,' which explores 200 years of American legend through artifacts, lifelike museum figures, and displays on the American rifleman in popular culture. Items on display include rare 19th century hunting rifles as well as memorabilia from the Davy Crockett television series of the 1950s. Several archeaological excavations at Historic Hanna's Town are part of the display.
The group will also have the opportunity to see the original 18th century Rattlesnake Flag, made for the Westmoreland County Pennsylvania militia.
After lunch at Hoffstot's Cafe in Oakmont, the group will tour 'Winter Diversions,' the current exhibition at the Kerr Memorial Museum. The musuem interprets the daily life of a middle-class family at the end of the 19th century. The Queen Anne style house was commissioned by Dr. Thomas Kerr in 1897. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On display is a beautiful three-piece going-away outfit on loan from our textile collection.
The cost for the trip is $60 for WCHS members and $75 for non-members and includes lunch, bus transportation, museum admissions, and gratuities. Reservations must be confirmed no later than March 9th. Call 724-532-1935 x10 for details and to reserve a seat.
